Games are a great way to develop skills, especially in children. They help parents and teachers engage with children in a fun way while increasing 1 or more skills in them.

The Game: Guess What?

The game is easy and fun to play. One player thinks of an object. The objective is that the other players have to guess what that object is only by asking questions.

Number of players:

2 or more

How to Play:

One player thinks of an object. Let’s say Player 1 thought of a ‘chair’. He/she starts by telling the others the number of alphabets in the object. The other players can then start asking questions, the answer to which Player 2 can give in a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ only. No explanations or longer answers or other word answers are permitted. So, the other players have to frame their question accordingly.

The other players can ask a total of 20 questions (you can increase it for first timers or very young children) within which they have to Guess What Player 1 had thought of.

Example:

Player 1 thinks of a ‘CHAIR’

Player 1 (starts the game): 5 alphabets

Player 2: Is it living?

Player 1: No

Player 2: Is it man-made?

Player 1: Yes

Player 2: Is it a machine?

Player 1: No

Player 2: Is it used inside homes?

Player 1: Yes

Player 2: Is it a piece of furniture?

Player 1: Yes

Player 2: Is it singular?

Player 1: Yes

Player 2: Is it a Table?

Player 1: No

Player 2: Is it a Chair?

Player 1: Yes

Then it is the turn of Player 2 to think of an object.

Rules:

Rules are simple. Answers to questions can only be in Yes or No. Only an object can be thought of. Names, brands, verbs are not allowed.

Benefits:

The game is very useful in developing clear thinking among children. It helps them evaluate the type of questions to be asked to help them zero in on any object faster. It helps in developing their critical thinking, their power of questioning and thinking out of the box. It also helps them understand each object better, as they have to answer the questions. Children ask “Is it soft?” or “Is it a gas?” and it has to be answered correctly.

We have had children thinking of ‘stars’ and ‘submarines’ and other children being able to guess them as well.

It is a fun game which most children enjoy thoroughly in 2 people or even in groups of 4-5 people.
