Books for 4–6-year-old

Books for Young Kids

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.”

– Stephen King

Reading is a habit that is best inculcated since childhood, and it is never too early to begin. For the first few years of my son’s life, I bought large sized picture books for him. I told him stories, pointed out the pictures and told him new made-up stories based on those same pictures. It was a great way to spend time with him – a time that I enjoyed and relished as much as he did. More importantly, that was the beginning of his love for books.

For a little older kids, the ones who can read small words and sentences, there opens up a whole new world of books and wonder. Now, while I have mentioned that these books are for 4- to-6-year-olds, it is important to understand that every child learns at his own pace. Some learn to read earlier than others and some later. Honestly, both are just fine.

The books below are for children who have started reading. If not yet started, these are also great books to develop an interest in reading. The parents can read these books aloud with their kids, pointing to the words as they speak. I write this from my own experience. I did that for a few books and before long, my son was reading on his own.

So here are 5 sets of books that are also great as gifts for young children:

1. Pepper series

These are not only fun to read but each story also focuses on teaching some good habit. The words are small – three or four letter words, with one or two sentences in every page. A great series to start off the reading habit.

2. Peppa Pig Series

A large number of children watch and love Peppa Pig. These books are especially great for such children since they already know the characters. The stories are simple and sentences are short and easy to read.

These books by Oliver Jeffer are about four exciting adventures of a boy. He learns how to catch a star and journeys to the South Pole and the moon. All along the way, he makes new discoveries and new friends.

4. The Gruffalo and Other Stories

These set of books by Julia Donaldson are my favorite. The stories are endearing, the characters are lovable and the illustrations by Axel Sheffer are amazing. I have no doubt that these will become your child’s favorite too.

5. The Tiger Who Came to Tea

This classic book by Judith Kerr, is a classic for a reason. Children love the story of Sophie and her extraordinary tea-time guest who gobbles all the sandwiches in one mouthful. A very entertaining book for young kids.
